With ReCap, it depends on what you have.
For some schools, reuse means finding a new home for a desk, filing cabinet or office chair. In a lab, it might be a piece of specialized equipment or a case of glassware. The items are different, but the basic problem is the same: something that is no longer needed in one place may still be useful somewhere else.
That’s why ReCap programs can look so different from one another. Each is set up around the kinds of materials a school actually has to move, rather than around a single definition of surplus.
Those differences also change what success looks like. Furniture can add up quickly in pounds diverted, while smaller, higher-value items may have a much bigger impact on purchasing costs.
The results from three ReCap programs show how that can look.
